Gastrointestinal Care

Gastrointestinal conditions present in a variety of ways across the age spectrum. They can have a detrimental effect on quality of life and dignity, with patients needing support to minimise the impact on their lives.

Care integration can impact on quality of care and improve outcomes at every stage of the patient pathway through early diagnosis and effective treatment. Entries for this category can be from individuals or teams responsible for planning or delivering integrated care pathways for this group of patients. Entries will be judged against the general criteria. Submissions could include one or more of the following elements:

  • Early diagnosis of acute and long-term gastrointestinal conditions
  • Urgent specialist intervention and treatment to improve outcomes
  • Support and advice to help patients maintain adequate nutrition and hydration
  • Regular monitoring and follow-up by specialist services for patients with long-term gastrointestinal conditions
  • Support for patients and families in minimising the impact on everyday life and adjusting to interventions such as stomas
