Pain Management

Pain is a symptom that can affect patients with a range of conditions and across all age groups. Chronic pain can adversely affect quality of life and impact on patient outcomes. Effective pain management uses a variety of techniques and approaches including pharmacological and behavioural change.

Care integration can impact on quality of care and improve outcomes through early intervention, management and long-term supportive care. Entries for this category can be from individuals or teams responsible for planning or delivering integrated care pathways for this group of patients. Entries will be judged against the general criteria. Submissions could include one or more of the following elements:

  • Timely referral to specialist services
  • Individualised care, using a wide range of interventions
  • A multidisciplinary approach which addresses the complexity of pain management
  • Innovative patient education to enable patients to understand their condition and empower them to take responsibility for self-management
  • Supportive care to promote quality of life and patient independence
